The initial inhabitants in New York were the Lenape. These were Algonquin people and they hunted fishes and used to farm in this area between the Hudson and Delaware Rivers. Europeans started invading to explore this area during the early 16th century. Giovanni da Verrazzano was an Italian who sailed to and fro around the Atlantic coast to search his route to Asia, but no one could settle here till 1624.
This was the year when the Dutch West India Company had sent about 30 families to dwell and work in this tiny area on Nutten Island, which is the Governors Island at present – they named in New Amsterdam. Peter Minuit, the settlement’s governor general, bought a large part of Manhattan Island in 1626. He traded it against 60 guilders, like tools, farming equipment, shell beads and cloth.
The population as New Amsterdam was less than 300 people and they shifted to Manhattan. Though the population grew quickly and by 1760 the New York City had over 18,000 people. After 50 years the population was around 202,590 and today, mover 8 million people reside here.
